GoPro Hero4 Silver review

As simple or sophisticated as you want it to be, GoPro's Hero4 Silver will impress pros and hobbyists alike with outstanding video and photo quality that far exceeds its humble “action cam” label.

Great video and photo quality ; Simple yet sophisticated ; Vivid touchscreen ; Highly stable Wi-Fi

Limited battery life ; Some issues with pixelation ; Can’t handle bright, direct light

GoPro deserves credit for breathing life back into the stagnant camcorder business. While traditional camcorders have lost their luster, action cameras have gained popularity. Competitors from Sony to Polaroid have challenged GoPro for this turf, but...

GoPro Hero4 Black review

Even if you're not a pro shooter, the ability to capture in glorious 4K is a worthy investment.

Great picture quality at 4K resolution ; Ability to capture high frame rates ; 12-megapixel photos at burst speeds of 30 fps ; More image control

Battery life is inadequate ; No preview screen ; Difficult to make menu changes without app

While the Hero4 Black has been discontinued, you can still find it for sale and Hero4 models are still popular with users. But before considering the Hero4 Black, the only question you should ask yourself is whether or not you want to capture 4K. As...

GoPro Hero 4 Black

Up until the recent launch of the GoPro Hero 5 Black, the Hero 4 Black proudly sat as the flagship action camera from GoPro. It was the first GoPro to support 4K at 30fps, where previously this was limited to a far more jittery 15fps.

The GoPro Hero 4 Black is an expensive action camera, but it's packed with shooting options and provides great image quality.

GoPro Hero4 Black

If you're looking for a small action camera that can capture video at 4K, the GoPro Hero4 Black is the one to get.

4K capture. Slow motion HD capability. Rugged design. ProTune recording. Time Lapse photo option. Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Waterproof to 131 feet with case. Many mounts and accessories available. Includes editing software.

Expensive. Short battery life. No LCD. Clunky interface. Lens shows lots of distortion. Omits image stabilization. Requires optional accessory for tripod use. Doesn't include AC adapter.

Conclusions The Hero4 Black is the best camera that GoPro makes, and the best action cam that we've tested—and it's priced accordingly. It maintains the small, go-anywhere design that make GoPros the favorite of adventurers and indie filmmakers alike,...

GoPro Hero4 Black review

GoPro has taken a tiny box roughly the size of a Zippo lighter and turned it into something truly remarkable.

The GoPro Hero4 Black delivers best-in-class video at resolutions up to 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 120fps. Wide assortment of mounting options from GoPro and third-party manufacturers.

Battery life can feel painfully short and due to a redesign you can't use older batteries with the Hero4. No option for in-camera digital image stabilization and it still needs a housing to be waterproof.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver is still our top choice for most people, but if you need the best video quality with the most shooting options, the Hero4 Black is it.

GoPro Hero4 Silver review

For the past couple generations, GoPro's Black model has been the one to buy because like the majority of top-of-the-line models, it had the best features and best performance and was markedly better than the step-down model, the Silver.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver produces some great video for an action cam. Its abundant resolution and frame-rate options will satisfy beginners and experienced shooters. The built-in touchscreen makes previewing and reviewing and changing settings a breeze.

It still needs a housing to be waterproof. Battery redesign means you can't use your old batteries and battery life will still be too short for some. No option for in-camera digital image stabilization.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver takes everything we liked about the Hero3+ Black -- especially the solid video quality -- and adds in some handy new features including a touchscreen, making it one of the best little action cameras around.

GoPro Hero4 Silver

Underneath the surface, the GoPro's Hero4 Silver is basically the Hero3+ Black Edition—and that's a good thing. Its top-notch performance and new touch-screen display justify this action cam's $400 price tag.

Excellent video quality. Capable of 4K recording. Versatile shooting modes. Touch-screen LCD. Improved menu system.

Expensive. Short battery life.

Conclusions The Hero4 Silver is excellent all around, and should fulfill every criterion if you're in the market for an action camera. The touch screen makes it easier to frame your shots and review your footage, but as I mentioned earlier, it's a...

GoPro Hero4 Black Edition review

The market-leading action cam's pro-level incarnation is strapped in and ready to roll, but does it live up to the hype?

Extensive manual settings ; Great app control ; Improved menu navigation

Expensive ; No onboard screen ; USB mic only

A fantastic pro-level creative tool for capturing the action, but think hard whether you really need to pay the extra over the Hero4 Silver.

GoPro's go-anywhere 4K action camera gets a full workout

4K video at 30fps and 1080p at up to 120fps ; Fast and effective Wi-Fi connection, Sturdy mounting system

No screen for viewing your shots – you'll need a smart device ; No zoom ; Slow startup

The GoPro Hero4 Black brings a major step up in video performance and some useful improvements to the design and control interface too.
