Microsoft Surface Book review: is this the finest high-spec laptop around?

With its detachable screen, we ponder if Microsoft can really take the fight to the MacBook Pro

Awesome power ; Completely flexible ; Genuinely innovative hinge

Do you really need the tablet? ; Rather expensive ; The grey attracts marks

Surface Book review: Microsoft's first laptop shoots for the moon

The Surface Book is a high-end laptop and part-time tablet, with some hidden gaming chops.

The Microsoft Surface Book packs high-end components, including new Intel processors and optional Nvidia graphics, into a smart, slim body. Some components and most of the battery are hidden in the base, so the tablet half is lighter. The high-res...

Configurations with the optional Nvidia GPU and more storage get very expensive. There are some first-generation quirks, including an awkward gap between the screen and base when closed.

While it's not nearly as refined as the new fourth-gen Surface Pro, Microsoft's Surface Book is a powerful, feature-filled premium hybrid that doesn't forget it's a laptop first.

Microsoft Surface Book review

An amazing laptop that does even more as a tablet

Futuristic design ; Unrivaled display ; Seamless tablet separation

Battery life falls well below promises ; Major updates are still in tow

While the Surface Book brings many technological innovations to the laptop space, its greatest strength is that it's just an all-around terrific device.

Microsoft Surface Book review: Surface Book 2 is here, but what's new?

The Surface Book, while hideously expensive, is still fantastic, but how much better is the Surface Book 2?

In my eyes, either the Dell XPS 13 or XPS 15 are better buys at this kind of price range, but if you have the budget and the wanton need for such a lavishly luxurious device, the Surface Book certainly won’t disappoint.

Surface Book i7 vs MacBook Pro

Microsoft has announced an updated, more powerful Surface Book, and Apple has (at last) updated the MacBook Pro. But how do these two top-end laptops compare, and which is best? It's Surface Book i7 vs MacBook Pro

It’s too early to come to any firm conclusions since we haven’t yet run our benchmarks on these laptops. But even without confirmed battery runtimes or performance scores, it’s clear that they are two different machines. The Surface Book is much more...

Review: Microsoft Surface Book

Microsoft is gunning for Apple and to win over creative pros with its latest hardware, but can the Surface Book offer a real alternative to a MacBook Pro?

Fantastic design ; Great screen ; Hugely powerful ; Turns into a sketchbook in seconds

You might need to learn Windows ; It's expensive

It’s difficult to find anything wrong with the Surface Book. The keyboard is excellent, screen delightful, and it’s hugely powerful and flexible for the creative professional. If Apple came out with a Mac/iPad Pro hybrid it might still sway us due to...

Microsoft Surface Book review: It's expensive, very expensive

Microsoft works its design magic, but while it gets a lot right, the Surface Book is outlandishly expensive

Read Microsoft’s bullish marketing material for the Surface Book, and you’ll recognise a company that has got its confidence back, and for good reason. This is yet another slick, impressive addition to the Surface family.

Microsoft Surface Book review

  (Rating Hidden)

Microsoft calls its Surface Book the 'ultimate laptop'. It's a heady claim, but on paper the specifications are certainly impressive, and the fully detachable screen is an eye-catching feature. It's soon to be surpassed with the Surface Book 2, but in...
